Firefighters with the New Orleans Fire Department were alerted around 6:29 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29, of a fire in the 4500 block of Papania Street. Once learning it was an apartment complex, a second alarm was called at 6:37 a.m.
NOFD officials said they simultaneously assessed the fire while working to extinguish the flames and evacuate the building.
Firefighters were told that the fire began around the stove in a second story apartment and extended to two apartments on the right and through the common attic space.
In total, 17 NOFD units carrying 50 personnel were able to get the fire under control by 7:04 a.m.
NOFD officials report 12 units, two unoccupied, were affected. Four received direct fire damage while other first floor apartments received water and smoke damage.
As a result, 10 households, 12 adults and two children, have been displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting those who suffered losses in the fire.
There were no injures reported to victims or firefighters.
