Ten sites have been proposed as an alternative location for the relocation of the South Dakota men’s prison — including several new ones in and around Sioux Falls.
Proposals will be reviewed Tuesday by a 22-person Project Prison Reset task force established by Gov. Larry Rhoden to study alternative sites to property between Harrisburg and Canton where an $825 million prison was proposed.
Listed by Assam Cos., the 120.5-acre property at 5840 N. Career Ave. sits at the intersection of two interstates and is adjacent to development parks and not far from workforce housing, the submission said.
Located near Interstate 90 and Marion Road, this land includes three parcels totaling 277 acres. It’s also served by Highway 38. The parcels are not in Sioux Falls city limits.
Located west of Foundation Park at Marion Road and 259th Street, this 151-acre parcel is listed by Bender Commercial Real Estate Services. It would need to be rezoned and hasn’t been annexed into Sioux Falls yet.
The former Citibank campus, which previously was reported as a potential site, also was included in the submission.
While it offers only about 70 acres, the infrastructure already exists, and a rendering shows how inmate housing pods could be built on the property. The current buildings would be reused for educational or administrative purposes.
Information included with the proposal noted that its estimated project costs would be 40 percent less than the original proposed location, “with an enhanced focus on rehabilitation and education, resulting in lower recidivism rates.”
Proposed by Sioux Metro Growth Alliance, this 110-acre site is 20 miles from the southern boundary of Sioux Falls, about 10 miles west of Canton and 10 miles east of Lennox. The property sits along Highway 18 and is less than a mile from Interstate 29.
“This location would be ideal for the project as it allows the state to use its existing contract with the city of Lennox for wastewater,” the submittal said. “Furthermore, the site is uniquely zoned to allow for any commercial or industrial use. Its location complies with the Lincoln County 2025 comprehensive plan as interstate corridors are preferred for commercial and industrial uses.”
Locations proposed outside of the Sioux Falls area include properties in Aberdeen, Grant County, Huron, Mitchell and Yankton.
The task force is expected to narrow down the proposals and finish its work this summer ahead of a special legislative session in July.
