BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — April 26, 2025
A wrong-way driver was killed and two others were injured in a multi-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on West State Road 46, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the scene at West SR 46 and Hunter Valley Road around 2:28 p.m. Witnesses told investigators that a white 2007 Mercury Milan, traveling eastbound, left the roadway, crossed the grass median, and continued east in the westbound lanes. The Mercury collided head-on with a gray 2025 Buick Enclave. A 2025 Mercedes-Benz, traveling next to the Buick, was unable to avoid the crash.
The driver of the Mercury Milan was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, authorities said. The driver of the Buick Enclave suffered several broken bones and was transported by ambulance. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz sustained multiple non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash prompted a full shutdown of SR 46 as the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office crash reconstruction team investigated. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Monroe County Coroner’s Office is working to notify the deceased driver’s family.
Officials said further information will be released once the family has been notified.
