Visitation Monday for fallen CFD Capt. David Meyer

CHICAGO — Visitation begins Monday for a fallen Chicago fire captain who was killed in the line of duty last week.

54-year-old CFD Captain David Meyer was a 28-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department. He was tragically killed while crews were responding to a garage fire that broke out around 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 5500 block of West Crystal in the Austin neighborhood.

He leaves behind a wife and four children.

A public visitation for Meyer is scheduled for Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, located at 6000 North Milwaukee Avenue in the Norwood Park neighborhood.

A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles.

Volunteers tied red ribbons up and down the street along N. Milwaukee Ave. Sunday morning during a show of support for Meyer’s family.

Charles Green, 44, was arrested just hours after the fire, according to Chicago police. He allegedly set a nearby trash can on fire, and the flames spread to the garage, according to investigators.

On Friday, Green was charged with aggravated arson and first-degree murder.
