According to a Facebook post from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the Highland Lake subdivision — which is located between Georgetown and Greenville — around 8 p.m. to investigate a teen’s disappearance.
During their investigation, police were told the missing teen may be in a nearby lake. First responders began to conduct search and rescue operations on the lake soon after they arrived at the scene.
FCSO confirmed that the teen’s body was recovered from the lake around 10:45 p.m. The sheriff’s office also reported that the teen was a student at Floyd Central High School.
New Albany/Floyd County Schools issued a statement on the student’s death on Facebook.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the accidental passing of one of our Floyd Central High School students,” district administrators wrote in their statement. “On behalf on the entire New Albany/Floyd County Schools community, we extend out heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the student’s family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
“Our hearts are with all those affected by this tragic loss. We recognize the profound impact this will have on our school community, and we are committed to providing support for any student or staff member who may need it.”
In their statement, school administrators reported that counselors and other support services staff will be available to meet with students and faculty in the coming days.
The Floyd County Sheriff and New Albany/Floyd County Schools have not publicly identified the decedent. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on his disappearance had been made available.
