Teen father charged with murdering 6-week-old baby

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 19-year-old man is accused of killing his infant son, Gladstone police announced on Monday.

Maliki Skutley was indicted on two counts of second-degree murder and first-degree assault on Friday. He was lodged at the Clackamas County Jail.

Authorities say that the infant, Paxton Shuler, suffered a severe brain injury on April 16 and was taken to Randall’s Children’s Hospital. Paxton died from his injuries on April 23.

“Paxton was left in Skutley’s care on April 16 while the infant’s mother was at work. The couple lived at the Budget Inn in Gladstone,” the Clackamas County DA’s Office said. “Paxton’s death was caused by a lack of oxygen to his brain and the result of blunt force trauma or extreme pressure. The injury is alleged to have occurred while Skutley was taking care of the baby.”

Skutley was arrested on April 20 and initially charged with first-degree assault. However, the charges were upgraded after Paxton died.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Gladstone police.
