Jiggly Caliente, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant, tragically passes away at 44

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Jiggly Caliente, a beloved drag performer, actress, and transgender rights advocate, who passed away at age 44 on April 27, 2025.

Known offstage as Bianca Castro-Arabejo, Caliente died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, following a severe infection that had recently led to the amputation of her right leg.

In a heartfelt statement, her family remembered her “infectious energy, fierce wit, and unwavering authenticity,” and described a legacy “of love, courage, and light” that will live on. “She will be deeply missed, always loved, and eternally remembered,” the statement concluded.

The news of Caliente’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow entertainers worldwide. Many remembered her not only for her on-stage charisma but also for the warmth and encouragement she offered off-stage.

From Drag Race to Mainstream Stardom

Jiggly Caliente first sashayed into the spotlight as a contestant on the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2012. Though she finished in eighth place, her bold personality and memorable performances made a lasting impression.

She later returned to the franchise in 2021 for RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (season 6), further cementing her status as a fan favorite. Over the years, Caliente became one of the show’s most recognizable alums, known for her quick wit and heartfelt authenticity that resonated with viewers.

Beyond her Drag Race appearances, Caliente expanded her career into acting and music. She landed guest roles on television, notably appearing in the comedy series Broad City and, most prominently, portraying Veronica Ferocity in the groundbreaking FX drama Pose.

In Pose, which aired from 2018 to 2021, Caliente’s character was part of a predominantly transgender cast, bringing attention to ball culture and trans women of color. Her involvement in such a high-profile, Emmy-winning series marked an important moment for representation in Hollywood and showcased her versatility as an actress.

Caliente was also musically talented, releasing an album and several singles that highlighted her creativity. In 2018, she dropped T.H.O.T. Process, a hip-hop-influenced album that made waves as the first hip-hop album by a Drag Race contestant. The music video for her body-positive anthem “All This Body” featured fellow drag stars and underscored her message of self-love and confidence.

She also released the cheekily titled single “Fckboi” that year, displaying her knack for blending humor with empowerment in her music. Additionally, Caliente contributed to multiple Christmas Queens music compilation albums, showing that her talents spanned many facets of entertainment.

In recent years, Jiggly Caliente had come full circle to her roots. She returned to her homeland as a judge on Drag Race Philippines (which premiered in 2022), lending her expertise and star power to nurture a new generation of drag artists.

Fans in the Philippines were proud to see one of their own shine on the international stage and then give back to the local drag scene. Through each venture — be it reality TV, scripted drama, or music — Caliente demonstrated a remarkable range and a commitment to uplifting others through entertainment.

A Champion for LGBTQ+ Rights and Trans Visibility

Off the stage, Jiggly Caliente was as fearless and impactful as she was on it. In 2016, a few years after her initial rise to fame, Caliente publicly came out as a transgender woman. This announcement further endeared her to fans and positioned her as an influential advocate for the transgender community.

“Drag was the awakening for my transness,” she reflected in a 2024 interview, linking her drag artistry to her personal journey of self-discovery. By sharing her story, Caliente helped others find the courage to live their truth and increased awareness of transgender identities among the wider public.

Caliente used her platform to champion LGBTQ+ rights and to push for greater visibility and acceptance of trans people, especially trans women of color. She often participated in Pride events, panel discussions, and rallies, speaking out about the challenges faced by the community. Colleagues noted that she had a natural ability to educate and inspire.

Whether it was advocating for inclusive healthcare or calling for an end to discrimination, Caliente approached activism with the same authenticity and passion that defined her performances. She became a role model to many young LGBTQ+ individuals — particularly Filipinx and Asian-American queer folks who saw themselves represented in her success.

Her advocacy extended to television projects as well. In 2020, Caliente co-hosted a talk show called “Translation”, alongside fellow trans personalities, where they discussed transgender experiences and issues in society.

This show provided a platform for candid conversations about identity and acceptance, further highlighting Caliente’s dedication to education and outreach. By appearing as herself on programs from CNN Philippines to morning talk shows, she continually stressed the importance of love, understanding, and pride in one’s identity.

Caliente’s work in advocacy was not limited to grand gestures or public events; it was also deeply personal. Friends recall how she would mentor younger queens and transgender women, offering guidance on everything from performing to transitioning. Her open-hearted encouragement made her a “mother” figure to many in the drag and trans communities. The love and wisdom she shared helped countless others to embrace who they are — a contribution to LGBTQ+ empowerment that is impossible to measure but widely felt.

An Outpouring of Love from Fans and Peers

In the wake of Jiggly Caliente’s passing, social media has been flooded with messages celebrating her life and mourning her loss. Fellow drag artists, celebrities, and fans alike have shared stories and tributes, painting a picture of someone who was universally adored for her spirit and generosity.

The official RuPaul’s Drag Race social media account paid homage to Caliente as a cherished member of the drag family. “We are devastated by the passing of Jiggly Caliente,” the show’s statement read, “Her talent, truth, and impact will never be forgotten, and her legacy will continue to slay — always”.

The message went on to say that Caliente’s family, friends, and fans are being held close in the Drag Race community’s hearts during this difficult time. This sentiment was echoed by many who worked with Caliente over the years.

Michelle Visage, a longtime judge on Drag Race and one of Caliente’s closest friends from the show, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “My Jiggles… the laughter was endless, our talks were special, your energy was contagious. You were and remain so very loved,” Visage wrote, affectionately using Caliente’s nickname.

“This world has lost an angel and we want you to soar high… I love you so much, honey,” she added. Visage’s message captured the mixture of grief and gratitude felt by those who knew Caliente personally.

Fellow queens from Caliente’s season and beyond also shared their memories. Jaremi Carey — better known to Drag Race fans as Phi Phi O’Hara, though he has since retired that stage persona — revealed how heartbreaking the loss was for him. In an emotional statement, Carey said Jiggly was his best friend and that “my heart breaks just writing this”.

He recounted rushing to the hospital to hold her hand one last time, and expressed deep pain at losing someone who was “everything” to him. “I LOVE YOU JIGGLY… you were and will always be my best friend,” Carey wrote, vowing never to forget her. His tribute spoke to the profound personal impact Caliente had on those dearest to her.

Other Drag Race alumnae highlighted Caliente’s journey and the joy she brought into their lives. Bob the Drag Queen, who started in the New York City drag circuit like Jiggly, reminisced about their early days. She wrote about how she was “lucky enough to tour, laugh, and cry with Jiggly over the years,” and how she loved seeing Jiggly evolve “from NYC star to international drag sensation.”

Bob summed up the community’s feelings, saying, “We lost a real one today. Sis, you really did ‘retire with the crown’”, the latter phrase referencing Caliente’s triumphant spirit.

Jinkx Monsoon, the season 5 Drag Race winner, remembered Caliente as “so much person in one little body” who absolutely “loved this life”. Meanwhile, Ginger Minj, another fellow queen and friend, praised Jiggly as “one of the fiercest, funniest, most loyal friends I’ve ever had,” admitting she was shattered by the news but “grateful I got to say goodbye”.

The theme across these messages was clear: Jiggly’s vivacious presence and loyal heart had touched everyone around her.

Even outside the immediate Drag Race circle, tributes poured in. Bianca Del Rio, a renowned comedy queen and winner of Season 6, kept her message short and sweet. “Rest well, my good time gal… Thank you for 20 years of laughter and friendship,” Bianca wrote, referring to the decades of memories they shared. Their friendship dated back long before reality TV fame, underlining how integral Caliente was to the close-knit drag community.

Fans, too, have been sharing clips of Jiggly’s most iconic performances and quotes, thanking her for the joy she brought into their lives and the inspiration she provided.

A Lasting Legacy of Courage and Authenticity

As the shock of Jiggly Caliente’s passing gives way to reflection, many are considering the legacy she leaves behind.

In her 44 years, Caliente managed to break barriers and fill spaces with love — an achievement that will continue to influence future generations. Her life was a testament to the power of authenticity: by unapologetically being herself, she showed others that they could do the same. This message of self-acceptance and pride in one’s identity is perhaps her greatest gift to the world.

Caliente’s impact on reality TV and pop culture is significant. She was part of a pioneering wave at a time when transgender representation in media was still limited. Caliente stood proudly as both a drag superstar and a trans woman of color, carving out space for more inclusive storytelling.

Young LGBTQ+ people — especially those of Asian and Pacific Islander descent — saw in her a role model who proved that dreams are within reach no matter one’s background or the obstacles one faces.

In the Philippines, where discussions around LGBTQ+ rights and trans visibility continue to evolve, having a figure like Jiggly in the public eye was monumental. She showed that Filipino talent could shine on the world stage and that being true to oneself is a victory in its own right.

Activists in Manila and beyond have lauded Caliente for using her platform to support local LGBTQ+ initiatives and for being a visible example of Filipino transgender excellence on international television.

Perhaps the most heartfelt aspect of Jiggly Caliente’s legacy is the personal impact she had on individuals. One of her drag proteges, June Jambalaya, who referred to Jiggly as her “drag mother,” shared how Caliente had been a guiding light in her life.

“Jiggly wasn’t just my drag mother, she was my safe place, my human diary, my compass when I was lost,” June wrote in an emotional tribute, crediting Caliente with reminding her of her worth during difficult times. “Every time, she reminded me how beautiful and talented I was, how my gift could never be measured by a placement on a show,” she added.

Stories like these — of mentorship, kindness, and upliftment — are being recounted by countless friends and fans. They illustrate that beyond the glitz and glamour of her public persona, Jiggly was someone who genuinely cared for others and helped them find strength within themselves.

As we celebrate Jiggly Caliente’s life, it’s clear that her legacy will continue to resonate. Her name, which she once chose on a playful dare (inspired by a Pokémon character and the Spanish word for “hot”), will now forever be associated with making a hot and indelible mark on culture.

From the stage to the screen, from pride rallies to personal heart-to-hearts, Jiggly lived boldly and with compassion. In mourning her, the community also honors the lessons she imparted: to laugh often, love who you are, uplift those around you, and never stop dreaming.
