Indiana State Police: Suspect dead after police shooting in Marion

MARION, Ind. — A suspect involved in a police shooting in Marion died on Sunday.

According to a press release from Indiana State Police, troopers, Grant County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Marion Police Department were called to a residence in the 3600 block of South Washington Street around 4:36 p.m. Police were sent to the scene because dispatchers had received reports that indicated an armed person was spotted in the area.

When police arrived at the scene, they located 56-year-old Derick P. Morgan of Marion. ISP reported that Morgan was armed with a knife and bleeding from his neck when police found him. Initial calls dispatchers received indicated Morgan was suffering from a self-inflicted injury.

Police issued several commands during their interaction with Morgan. ISP reported that Morgan disregarded law enforcement’s commands at charged at police.

When Morgan began charging, a law enforcement officer at the scene shot him at least once. ISP confirmed that Morgan was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

The law enforcement officer who shot Morgan has been placed on administrative leave. State police reported that no law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

ISP confirmed that it is leading the investigation of the shooting. The Grant County Prosecutor’s Office is assisting ISP with its investigation.

A FOX59/CBS4 crew located a large crime scene in the area of 36th and Washington Streets in Marion on Sunday night. Police were seen setting down evidence markers and speaking with members of the general public. FOX59/CBS4’s crew also spotted a law enforcement vehicle with a broken back windshield at the scene.
