Batavia police said it all started just after 1:30 a.m. when officers responded to a call about two female victims and multiple children who were reportedly being held against their will in an apartment in the 1200 block of East Wilson Street.
After officers unsuccessfully attempted to contact the individuals inside the home, they then learned that the suspect, 23-year-old Kerry Smith, may have been armed with a gun.
A perimeter was then set up around the apartment and officers brought in the Kane County Regional SWAT Team for assistance and obtained a search warrant for the apartment.
After authorities established a line of communication with an occupant of the apartment, they entered the home to ensure the victims were safe.
Once authorities were inside the home, the victims were safely located and Smith was taken into custody.
Officers said one female victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and no injuries were reported.
After securing the premises, officers were not able to locate a gun during a search of the apartment.
According to police, Smith, a resident of Atlanta, Georgia, has been charged with multiple misdemeanors, including violation of an order of protection, domestic battery causing harm and domestic battery insulting or provoking contact.
At the time of his arrest, Smith also had multiple active warrants from Aurora Police and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office.
