State Senator Dave Cortese (D-Silicon Valley) announced Friday that he was appointed to the special senate committee on International Sporting Events.
Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara — the home of the San Francisco 49ers — will play host to six games in the 2026 FIFA World Cup next June and July. There are eight World Cup games scheduled for Los Angeles.
The bipartisan committee of 11 senators is tasked with ensuring California is ready to host both the World Cup and 2028 Olympics, which are expected to bring millions of fans to the state.
“California is going to be on the world stage for these two monumental sporting events, and I will do everything in my capacity to ensure public safety, transportation and infrastructure are in the best shape possible to make these events go smoothly,” said Sen. Cortese, Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee.
The Senate Special Committee will hold a series of hearings over the upcoming months.
