Learn about Utah’s dinosaurs: Free tours offered at quarry this summer

HANKSVILLE, Utah (ABC4) — Get ready to walk amongst the dinosaurs this summer with free tours at BLM’s Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry.

Dinosaur tours will run for five weeks in May and June, where paleontology experts from the Burpee Museum of Natural History will give a 30-minute guided tour through one of Utah’s most fossil-rich public land sites.

Tours will run the following weeks:

  • May 12–17
  • May 19–24
  • No tours May 26–31 (due to the University Rover Challenge)
  • June 2–7
  • June 9–14
  • June 16–21

Tours will be offered Monday through Friday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., and Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., weather permitting. There will be no tours on Sundays. Group sizes are limited to 25 people and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry is an active excavation site where visitors can see real dinosaur fossils embedded in the ground.

“Tours will include a stop along the quarry with explanations of the area’s geology, prehistoric environment, and the ongoing scientific work being done by the Burpee Museum of Natural History from Rockford, Illinois,” a press release from BLM Color Country District Office said.

It’s recommended that you come in a high-clearance vehicle due to road conditions.
