Court docs: Drunk driver plowed into scooter riders in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Court documents detail how multiple witnesses saw an accused drunk driver “plow” into a scooter not far from the Monon Trail entrance on College Avenue.

Two people were reportedly on the scooter when a silver or gray Toyota Celica ran into them at N. College and 13th Street. Court documents reveal the alleged drunk driver later called 911 after fleeing the scene and admitted to running someone over.

Horacio Martinez Morales, 19, was charged this week with a slew of felonies including two counts of leaving the scene of an accident as a Level 3 felony.

Previous stories detail the April 19 collision, which sent two victims to the hospital with serious injuries.

One witness told police he was driving on College Avenue when he spotted several scooters not far from the Monon Trail entrance. The witness drove past the scooters right before he saw a silver car “plow into them.”

The witness said he circled around and noticed the suspect vehicle back up and drive around the victims before fleeing north on College Avenue and turning onto 16th Street. Another witness reported seeing the victims go flying off the scooter and the scooter dragged beneath the suspect’s vehicle.

One of the two injured victims was transported from the scene in critical condition.

Despite fleeing the scene, Morales later had a change of heart and reportedly called 911 dispatch roughly 40 minutes after the crash. Dispatchers said Morales sounded intoxicated and wasn’t making much sense, but he did admit to hitting someone and fleeing the scene.

When officers caught up with Morales, he reportedly had alcohol on his breath and his eyes were glossy and bloodshot. Police again said Morales admitted to driving and being involved in a crash, but he couldn’t recall where it had occurred.

Morales did not have a valid driver’s license, according to court documents, and open bottles of beer were found in his car. A preliminary blood test revealed Morales had a blood alcohol content of .153%. nearly double the legal limit.

Court records reveal how police were able to speak to the two victims in the hospital. One reported suffering a confusion, a fractured nose, injuries around his eye, cuts on his back and bruises to his legs. The other suffered a broken foot, road rash, lacerations to his elbow and stitches to his head.

One of the victims told police he recalled only headlights and seeing his friend fly off the scooter before coming to in the hospital. The other victim recalled being thrown from the scooter and seeing his friend lying roughly a block away.

If convicted of a Level 3 felony, Morales faces up to 16 years in prison.
