Dobet Gnahoré was born in 1982 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to a musical family. Her father, Boni Gnahoré, was a percussionist and a founding member of the renowned Ivorian cultural organization, Ki-Yi M’Bock.
Dobet’s training began at her father’s dance and theater school, Ki-Yi M’Bock, where she learned various African musical traditions, including dance and percussion. This comprehensive training helped her develop a deep appreciation for African cultural heritage and artistic expression. Growing up in an environment rich in musical traditions and creativity, Dobet was exposed to various forms of art, including dance and theater, from a young age.
Since then, Gnahoré has earned recognition for her music and performed worldwide, releasing several records and earning critical acclaim. In 2010, Gnahoré earned a Grammy for her collaboration with American singer India.Arieon on the song “Pearl” for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Gnahoré’s efforts extend beyond the stage as she uses her platform for many advocacy and humanitarian supporting women’s rights and empowerment. Gnahoré hopes that her commitment to advocacy inspires artists and audiences alike to have an impact beyond the world of music.
Gnahoré is set to hosts one of the last Festival International performances of the weekend on Sunday, April 27 at 5:15 p.m. on the Scene Oschner Lafayette Fais Do Do stage.
