Jackson community leaders urge cleanup of illegal dumpsite

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson community leaders want an illegal dumpsite filled with trash and tires to be cleaned up.

There is a dumpsite at an abandoned gas station on the corner of Prentiss Street and Fortification Street.

“We got to start bringing more awareness. Just imagine months ago when it first started, everybody who road past, you cared enough to call in, this wouldn’t be out here,” said Byron Brumfield.

People said they’re tired of people dumping items in the capital city.

“We have to realize we have a city, a city that consist of individuals and communities in this. Bigger than the person who was selfish enough to dump this blight in our communities,” said Joseph Holiday.

Even though community volunteers are working to clean up the mess, Councilman Kenneth Stokes, Ward 3, wants the city to increase its budget to hire people to remove tires and trash.

“This is a health issue. It’s a health emergency, because this is a killer,” said Stokes.

The councilman will hold a community forum at City Hall at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 to discuss illegal dumping and youth summer jobs.
