MEXICO CITY LINK: Mexico low-cost airline Viva plans a new non-stop connection between Miami International Airport and Mexico City’s Felipe Ángeles International Airport starting Nov. 21. The flight is to operate four days a week – every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. The airline celebrated its first departure from Miami International Airport last July 1 to provide three flights weekly linking Miami and Monterrey, followed the next day by the first of twice-weekly flights linking Miami and Merida. “Mexico is already our second-busiest international market, generating 1.6 million travelers to and from Miami-Dade County, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors with Viva’s new route,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Ralph Cutié.

SUMMER YOUTH INTERNS: All but six of the 3,193 high school students who enrolled in the Miami-Dade County Summer Youth Internship Program last year successfully completed their paid internships by earning high school credits, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reported to county commissioners this month. The program is funded through a variety of grants. The interns from public and charter schools were entering the tenth through twelfth grades. Of these students, 482 received dual enrollment credit from Miami Dade College. The report said that 73% had on-site internships, 22.5% had hybrid internships with both remote and on-site hours, and 4.5% had fully remote internships. The report said that while 3,193 students were accepted in the funded internships, the total of 4,502 eligible applicants far exceeded grant funding.

FIX-UP POOL: Citing a backlog of needed road repairs in Miami-Dade County and the lack of county in-house repair staffing, commissioners this month ordered Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to report within 30 days regarding the establishment of a pool of businesses that would handle outsourced repair work on the roadways that the county maintains. Commissioner Roberto Gonzalez sponsored the measure.

MEDICAL ASSOCIATION LEADERS: Adriana Bonansea-Frances, M.D., who specializes in allergy and immunology, has been named president of the Dade County Medical Association for 2025-2026 by the association’s board of directors to be considered by the association’s membership. Julie Kantor, M.D., was named president-elect and Jorge L. Marcos, M.D., was named vice president.

GAS PRICES FALL: Average gas prices in Miami fell 6.9 cents per gallon last week to $2.94, according to GasBuddy. Prices in Miami are 2.5 cents higher than a month ago but 65.9 cents lower than a year ago.
