City of New Orleans announces Jazz Fest safety measures, traffic reminders

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Thursday, April 24, is the first day of the 2025 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

As festivalgoers get ready to watch artists like Pearl Jam, Lil Wayne & The Roots and Kacey Musgraves take the stage, officials with the City of New Orleans are reminding residents about safety and traffic measures.

City officials said that about 211 New Orleans Police Department officers are assigned to be staffed at the festival each day, as well as full staffing in the first and third districts near the Fairgrounds neighborhoods.

Louisiana State Police and Troop NOLA will also be fully staffed during the festival.

According to the city, concrete and water barriers will be placed in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

City officials are also reminding residents of ways to stay safe in warm weather, including:

  • Staying hydrated
  • Wearing loose-fitting, light-colored and breathable clothing. City officials also recommend wearing sunglasses and a brimmed hat.
  • Wearing and re-applying sunscreen
  • Watching for signs of heat exhaustion like dizziness, nausea, heavy sweating and rapid pulse

Two first aid stations will also be available on the festival grounds.

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority announced that Cemetery streetcars will be rerouted to City Park. RTA officials said buses will be used for passengers wanting to get to Cemeteries from Canal and Carrollton streets by transferring from the streetcar.
