‘Volley of wine bottles.’ Morgan Hill police describe melee at Safeway

(KRON) — Morgan Hill police released more details Tuesday about what happened before officers shot a man inside a Safeway grocery store on Dunne Avenue last week.

Shaun Hillman, 40, had refused to leave the Safeway, and when officers arrived, he “threw a volley of wine bottles in rapid succession at them,” the Morgan Hill Police Department wrote. Hillman survived the police shooting

The incident began on April 18 when Hillman entered the grocery store carrying a large kitchen knife. He ignored employees who asked him to leave, stole an employee’s box cutter, and struck one victim in the head with a wine bottle.

“When Morgan Hill Police officers arrived on scene, they ordered Hillman multiple times to drop the knife, which he refused and ran about the store,” MPDP wrote.

Officers evacuated Safeway, called for backup, and found the victim inside bleeding from a head wound. MHPD said after officers’ de-escalation techniques failed, Hillman began launching wine bottles at them.

An officer opened fire when Hillman charged forward, according to MHPD.

Hillman was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. No officers were injured.

Morgan Hill Police Department said it will release body camera video of the incident within 30 days.
