SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Four suspects have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft of property throughout Colorado and Utah. The arrests were announced by Colorado officials last Friday, and Utah officers confirmed their involvement on Tuesday.
According to Colorado’s Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the four suspects were arrested after a “long-term investigation across multiple agencies.” The suspects were identified as Luis Leiva Arizmendiz, 20; Nerio Estrada Soto, 19; Roberto Soto Cruz, 35; Lorena Mendoza Soto, 29.
“Great work from one of our own detectives who played a key role in this,” the Pleasant Grove Police Department said on Tuesday. “The case involves multiple vehicle theft throughout Utah.”
Each of the suspects was arrested on two counts of second-degree motor vehicle theft, theft over $100,000, and conspiracy. Officials said more than $170,000 in stolen property was recovered during the investigation, including two trucks, two Polaris Rzrs, two trailers, and a Polaris Rzr frame.
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said the group “is likely responsible for multiple thefts” across both Colorado and Utah, and is believed to have operated in both states “for some time.”
A suspect vehicle was identified on April 15 in eastern Utah, and officials said the suspects would likely return to Colorado with stolen vehicles early the next day — which was “a tactic law enforcement believes they have employed on several previous occasions.”
The suspects were identified and stopped by officials as they entered Colorado, and the stolen property was recovered within hours.
“It is believed that if not for this law enforcement operation, these vehicles would likely never have been recovered,” the sheriff’s office said.
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office identified and thanked eight other agencies — including the Pleasant Grove Police Department — for their assistance in the operation.
The suspects were booked into the Garfield County Jail in Colorado on the aforementioned charges.
