Suspected lightning strike kills man at Ross Barnett Reservoir

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Investigators believe a lightning strike killed a Copiah County man on the Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Reservoir Police Chief Carlos DiPuma said the department received a call about an abandoned boat at Goshen South on Tuesday, April 22. When officers arrived, they found the boat had drifted to the boat ramp.

While officers assessed the situation, DiPuma said one of them observed a person about 50 yards from the ramp. The team deployed a boat and retrieved a body.

According to DiPuma, preliminary findings suggested that the incident may have been the result of a lightning strike to the vessel. The case remains under investigation.
