New hours for Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival after shooting, officials announce
PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — The hours for the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival will be changed after a nearby shooting this year, officials announced Wednesday.
Festival officials said the decision was not made lightly. The change was made after getting input from law enforcement and community leaders to put a priority on public safety while keeping the “heart and spirit” of the festival.
New hours:
11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday
9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday
9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday
“The safety and well-being of our community is—and always will be—our top priority. In response, and after much thoughtful discussion, we have taken proactive steps to ensure that the festival remains a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees in the years to come,” said Chief of Ponchatoula Police Department Bry Layrisson.
