22-year-old Jamari Edwards, a Chicago resident, pleaded guilty on Thursday to federal carjacking and firearm charges, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois.
Prosecutors said the charges stem from Edwards’ role in three armed carjackings that unfolded in August of 2022 in West Englewood.
One of the incidents unfolded in the drive-through of a coffee shop while the two others allegedly occurred outside of a convenience store in the area.
According to prosecutors, during each of the incidents, Edwrads pointed a gun at the victims while he demanded their keys.
During the carjacking that unfolded in the coffee shop drive-through, prosecutors said Edwards shot the victim in the leg even after the driver had already given him the key and gotten out of the car.
Prosecutors said before the shooting, Edwards asked the victim something to the effect of, “Why are you not scared?”
Edwards could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 17 years in federal prison and a maximum of life. He is set to appear in court for sentencing on Aug. 12.
Authorities did not provide a booking photo for Edwards.
