State police chase stolen cruiser from Indiana to Kentucky

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) – A video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the start of a police chase in Chandler where a suspect stole a marked police vehicle while wielding a sword. Officials say the chase ended in Owensboro.

Indiana State Police say this began as reported reckless driving. They say the suspect was wearing a full-face motorcycle helmet and pulled out a sword on police.

ISP also says the suspect was injured, suffering from a gunshot wound after Chandler Police shot multiple times.

Authorities say the suspect used the radio while inside the vehicle, disrupting communications with officers and dispatch.

Video shows a Chandler Police officer shooting the suspect in the cruiser. Automotive technician Brian Richardson saw the event unfold at the beginning – calling the situation chaotic.

“He hit this ditch, come out of it, and then he stopped and got out and he put his hands up,” says Richardson. “And the cops were coming closer and closer and then he decides to run around the car and get a sword, then went off from there.”

According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the area of US Highway 231 near the William Natcher Bridge at approximately 9:30 a.m.. Deputies arriving at the scene say they were able to find the stolen police vehicle wrecked off the roadway at the intersection of Terminal Road and US 60 East near Maceo. Authorities say they were able to catch up to the suspect, who fled on foot, approximately 300 yards into the field where the vehicle was found.

Police reported the suspect, identified as Nina Adaline Devillez, 31, of Santa Claus, attempted to strike officers with a motorcycle helmet during the arrest. Authorities say Devillez was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for gunshot wounds to the chest.

Devillez faces charges of evading police, criminal trespass, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Devillez was previously charged with attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and pointing a loaded firearm following an incident in Lawrence County in November.

Indiana State Police are investigating the incident, and the Chandler Police officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave.

Eyewitness News is still learning more information and will update as it becomes available.
