SFUSD Superintendent Maria Su is proposing restructuring the district office and eliminating jobs. The restructuring could impact hundreds of employees.
Over last summer, the district was considering closing schools because of dropping enrollment to make up for a $100 million deficit. That didn’t happen. Instead, the superintendent proposing the closures at the time, Matt Wayne, resigned.
The district has lost more than 4,000 students since 2017.
Su was appointed by former San Francisco Mayor London Breed. Su said job cuts are coming, but she’s not getting rid of any teachers.
“I’m very committed to making sure that we have a certificated teacher in every single one of our classrooms so that we can meet the goals of achieving those student outcomes that our board has set out for us,” said Su.
In order to cut the budget by $114 million, Su said they will be eliminating some counselors, paraprofessionals and district office staff.
The unions representing school employees are against layoffs. They are calling for smaller class sizes and competitive wages.
“These are not optional luxuries, they are lifelines,” a joint letter from SFUSD unions said earlier this month. “Eliminating vital personnel will dramatically increase the burden on educators, many of whom are already stretched beyond capacity.”
The SF Board of Education is set to meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. It is up to the board to approve any cuts.
