“They had police officers parked in the front, the back, the side, everywhere that you can think of. They actually had about 30 police officers out here,” she said.
For the past several years, North City Park has been closed on Easter Sunday in reference to issues with crime. Broussard says she was never told about the park being open this year and was shocked to get multiple calls about something going on at the park with the number of police who were present.
“It looked like a crime scene,” she said.
Further issues began when Broussard discovered South City Park had been opened all day with no police present.
“I feel some kind of discrimination on that,” she said. “We had heavy police presence here, but we had no police presence on the South Park. Not only that, but the North Park also had a time limit from 2-6 p.m. The South Park had been open since 7:30 a.m. that morning and didn’t close till 10 or 11 p.m. last night without any police presence.”
News 10 reached out to the Opelousas mayor and police chief for comments on the story but have received no explanation as of now.
