Diver creates GoFundMe to recover presumed Martin Family car from Cascade Locks

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The recovery efforts to pull a car from the bottom of the Cascade Locks continue, but divers are asking for the public’s help.

buried under years of sediment in the Columbia River. The story came after diver Archer Mayo spent six years searching for the car that disappeared with a family of five inside in December 1958.

Last month, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Department tried to pull the car from the water, though only the chassis could be removed.

But for Mayo, the recovery effort is far from over.

“I would love to see this fully resolved. I’ve been working with the Hood River County sheriff and the different port authorities. We’re coming up with a plan to really bring this hopefully to a conclusion,” he said.

Mayo is planning to bring in other divers and specialized equipment to free the car from the sediment. To do it, he has started a GoFundMe campaign to cover the costs.
