(WHTM) – Democrat Daniel Byron says he will be running against incumbent Republican Congressman Dan Meuser in Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District.

Byron, a Williamsport resident, filed a Statement of Candidacy with the Federal Election Commission on April 12.

Byron notes he is currently working toward a college degree after briefly attending Elmira College in New York. After participating in JROTC, Byron learned he had an allergy that prevented him from serving in the military.

Byron says he now works in retail management and can “see the direct impact that the decisions in D.C have on everyday working people.”

“I am no lawyer, no doctor, no politician; I am an average guy, living an average life, and honestly just looking to bring some perspective to Congress,” says Byron’s campaign website.

The 9th Congressional District covers parts of 12 counties stretching from Lebanon County to Bradford County. Williamsport is split between the 9th and 15th Congressional Districts.

A four term Congressman, Meuser won re-election in November over Democrat Amanda Waldman with more than 70% of the vote. Meuser has received at least 59% of the vote in each of his congressional campaigns.

Meuser has filed a Statement of Candidacy for the 2026 congressional election, however, he has publicly acknowledged that he is considering a run for Governor.

State Senator Doug Mastriano (R) says he is considering a second run for Governor after losing to Shapiro in 2022. State Treasurer Stacy Garrity (R) has also teased a potential gubernatorial run, saying she is “listening” and “ready to do what’s necessary to help (her) team win.”

Governor Josh Shapiro is expected to run for re-election in 2026 with a potential White House bid in 2028.
