Dozens of family members, police officers, and others who knew Huesca attended the memorial roll call Monday afternoon at the Gold Star Families Memorial.

“We often times, as the police, we think about our losses because Luis Huesca was our family member as well,” Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling said. “But what we really need to think about are the family members.”

Huesca was shot and killed the morning of April 21, 2024, while driving home from work in Gage Park. Police said he had his uniform on when they arrived, but his gun, badge and personal car had been stolen. Huesca was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later died.

CPD later arrested and charged 22-year-old Xavier Tate with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting that took Huesca’s life.

Before his death, Huesca had served with CPD for six years and was 30 years old. His family described him as kind, smart, and as someone who was just starting his life. Huesca’s fellow officers shared similar sentiments at the memorial.

“He lived his life to the fullest,” one officer said. “He loved to travel, take on new hobbies, enjoy great food, and spend quality time with his family.”

Family in attendance took a moment to thank CPD for their support over the last year since Huesca’s death, offering prayers as officers continue their service.

“I used to have these conversations with Luis and I,” said Lily O’Brien, Huesca’s sister. “As I look around at all the officers and everyone that offers us support, all I can think of is that I hope you’re safe when you’re out in the streets. And I hope your family doesn’t have to stand here one day, and that you take care of each other.”

A memorial mass will be held at 6 p.m. at the St. Gall Catholic Church near the intersection of West 55th and South Kedzie Avenues. The event is open to the public.
