More Bay Area Goodwill locations close, more layoffs

(KRON) — Goodwill recently closed four Bay Area retail stores, six donation sites, and will also close two regional headquarters and an Oakland warehouse, the organization told KRON4.

Goodwill stores recently closed in Vacaville, Vallejo, Benicia and Hayward. Donation sites were closed in San Francisco’s Marina District, Walnut Creek, Moraga, Redwood City, Mill Valley and Westborough.

In April, 90 Goodwill employees were laid off after the closure of two Bay Area locations. More employees were laid off as a result of the latest closures, San Francisco Bay Area Goodwill spokesperson Rodney Scearce told KRON4.

“These updates are intended to serve the local community more efficiently,” Scearce said. “However, some staff reductions have occurred as a result. We are grateful for the support of our local team members at these locations and have extended them the opportunity to apply for roles at alternate locations.”

Scearce said that the closed locations weren’t burning in enough money to cover business expenses. The organization said it plans to open new Bay Area stores in the future.

“While never an easy decision, it became necessary to close a few store locations due to their size and operational limitations where store revenues were not enough to cover operational and personnel costs,” he said. “Our goal in the coming months and years is to open new locations in the Bay Area that are larger and financially more sustainable.”
