In the separate incidents, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.
The first shooting occurred on December 6, 2023, in Amory on Tschudi Street. Officers responded to a call for service regarding a person firing a weapon.
When officers arrived, Bailey Martin, with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS), said the suspect began to fire the weapon towards the officers. The officers returned fire, and the suspect, Shaqwan Cribbs, 22, of Amory, died from his injuries.
The second shooting happened on January 28, 2024, in Jackson. Capitol police said they attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Porter Street and University Boulevard around 4:00 p.m.
Martin said the suspect led the officers on a brief chase before he got out of his vehicle on Winter Street. According to Martin, the suspect exited with vehicle with a weapon, and officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The suspect was injured and taken to a local hospital.
The third shooting occurred on May 2, 2024, in Mendenhall. According to Martin, an officer was booking a suspect on domestic violence charges at the police station when an altercation occurred between the suspect and the officer.
During the altercation, Martin said the officer discharged his weapon and shot the suspect. The officer received minor injuries, and the suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
