Gov. Andy Beshear, Kentucky lawmakers mourning loss of Pope Francis

KENTUCKY (FOX 56) — Kentucky officials have joined in mourning following Pope Francis’ death.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell said from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived, the Associated Press reported.

He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, 38 days after being hospitalized for double pneumonia. According to the Associated Press, Francis is remembered as “history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.”

On Monday morning, April 21, Gov. Andy Beshear empathized with those mourning, noting the loss of Francis is great, but his impact on the world is greater.

Pope Francis earned the title ‘The People’s Pope’ by showing kindness and mercy, standing for love above hate and extending a hand to help all people. He led by example, and his humility and dedication to God brought people together. His loss is great, but his impact is greater.

Sen. Mitch McConnell also commended Francis for his dedication to the vulnerable, the poor, and the unborn.

Elaine and I join people of faith around the world in mourning the passing of his holiness, Pope Francis. From the beginning of his papacy, the Holy Father invited Christians from every walk of life to more fully embrace the call to care for the vulnerable, including the unborn and the poorest among us. He reminded us by word and deed that we are all called to lives of faithful service. Now, as the shepherd of more than a billion Roman Catholics reaps his eternal reward, we give thanks for a life of witness to the truth: Our hearts are restless until they rest in God.
Sen. Mitch McConnell

Plans for Francis’ funeral haven’t been announced at this time. His death begins the process of selecting a successor, according to longstanding Vatican traditions.
