From QB1 to the Big Leagues: Former Warren Easton star, Lance LeGendre, is hopeful for a chance in the NFL

NEW ORLEANS — The spotlight is nothing new for Lance LeGendre.

The former four-star recruit out of Warren Easton was one of the top-ranked quarterbacks in 2019 but nationally, he’s known as a star from the popular Netflix series, “QB1”, where he was featured during his senior season.

“And I was shocked, a guy like me?”, says LeGendre. “Knowing where I stay at and stuff like that. But they said they were cool with it and it was history from there.”

LeGendre spent time at Maryland, playing only six games over two years. He then made the decision to come back to his home state and join the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. LeGendre didn’t play the first year, but he was offered a different approach from something he knew so well.

“I thought about it a lot but at the end, I had to make a grown-up decision. It was either play the wide receiver position or take my talents elsewhere. That’s the two ultimatums I had. How everything was aligned as far as my school and the timing of me graduating, it just made sense for me to stay and keep things on track here.”

Switching from QB1 to wide receiver was mentally frustrating but it was a necessary change in the long run. For example, after being suspended for the 2023 season, 2024 is where he made the most of his “Last Dance” – 49 receptions for 826 yards and 6 touchdowns, including a 2-score game against Wake Forest.

“I was really on a revenge tour. When I say revenge, I really wanted to get back on the field and display my talent. I was missing in that 2023 season. I wanted to do a whole lot for the team that I just couldn’t. It was a tough seeing that. I had to be a strong individual to be able to watch it from an audience standpoint knowing that I was supposed to be out there.”

LeGendre believes it’s that type of willingness and versatility that makes him attractive to NFL teams.

“I can come to a team and impact a team in a few ways. I can get on special teams and help out with that core. I can get at the quarterback position and keep a defense honest and I also could play the wide receiver position I could take the top off the roof or any intermediate route, I’m just a useful resource.”

LeGendre says he’s talked with a handful of NFL teams during this process and what he’s been told the most is they like his 6’2, 218-pound build. But, he understands that it’s way more than just his frame, allowing teams to know who Lance LeGendre is… off the field.

“Everything has been base-like. Who do you look to as a mentor? What are some of your hobbies? What do you do outside of football when you’re not playing? It’s been pretty base-like.”
