The school’s drama students were welcomed back to campus by a police escort after becoming state champions, and were met by cheers and applause.
Viewer video shows the students triumphantly departing a school bus after returning to campus. Several students were also seen holding smaller trophies, plaques, or wearing medals around their necks after the competition as well.
According to the 2024-2025 UHSAA handbook, the top three ranked plays in the theater competition are awarded plaques for their respective rankings, and all others are granted certificates. Medals are awarded to pieces that received at least 65 points during the competition.
The competition, held by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA), had several categories for students to compete in, including classic scenes, contemporary scenes, costume design, musical theatre, and pantomime, among others.
Before advancing to the state competition, individual competitors had to have received at least 60 points at the regional level. Plays must have ranked in the top three winners at the regional level, but there are exceptions for the fourth- and fifth-place plays as well. Regional and state theatre meets were held in March and April.
Almost a decade ago, the Utah Advisory Council of Theatre Teachers (UACTT) was given permission by UHSSA to represent the Beehive State’s theatre teachers and help improve the theatre meets. The UACTT communicates with the state’s teachers and with the UHSAA.
