Many under his leadership said they have not experienced a leader like him before. They said Pope Francis made himself very public and accessible while teaching people to live right.
“My first thought this morning is that the world and the Catholic Church has lost a great humanitarian. He has had more influence on bringing the marginalized into focus, and I think that is his greatest legacy,” said Yvonne Thaxton with St. Paul Catholic Church.
Reflecting on his legacy, many called him a progressive pope, leading with love, inclusivity and compassion.
“Personally, I loved his his pastoral care. You know, he always put the person first. You know, somebody sent me a little meme this morning saying, ‘You first.’ And I thought, hey, that’s summarized him really good, because it was about other people, particularly people who are struggling and finding life difficult. That was him. You first,” said Father Gerry Hurley with St. Paul Catholic Church.
Pope Francis made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, calling for peace in Ukraine, a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages.
The Catholic Church will soon start the selection process of a new pope. The College of Cardinals will gather at the Vatican for a conclave in the weeks to come.
