SF Mayor Daniel Lurie and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi were both in attendance for opening night at the Presidio. It is the 68th year of the festival and it includes over 150 films from more than 50 countries. Several Bay Area filmmakers are featured throughout the nearly two-week event.
“Arts and culture are what drives San Francisco, always has always will, and the SFFILM festival is a part of our fabric,” Lurie said.
It’s not just new films being featured, older title films are included in this year’s schedule alongside tributes to famed directors like Chris Columbus.
One of the main themes movie goers will notice is coming-of-age stories at any age, driving home the point that you never stop growing. But organizers say getting back to the longer schedule gave them more room to be creative as well in this year’s lineup.
“One theme that developed naturally is more midnight content, darker, psychological thriller type films with a little more violent undertone,” explained Director of Programming Jessie Fairbanks.
The SFFilm festival runs through April 27 with screenings at theaters across the city of San Francisco and over in Berkeley.
