USA Today released its roundup of the nation’s top 10 small towns on the West Coast, and Astoria was ranked at No. 2.
“This historic coastal town at the mouth of the Columbia River boasts a rich maritime heritage, with icons like the Astoria Column — a 125-foot tower with a historic mural — and the Oregon Film Museum housed in the old Clatsop County Jail,” USA Today wrote. “Fresh seafood, craft breweries, and unforgettable riverfront views make Astoria a standout destination for travelers seeking a blend of history, culinary excellence, and scenic beauty. The misty, atmospheric charm is pure Pacific Northwest.”
The national newspaper compiled the list by weighing votes from a panel of experts and readers. Each destination has a population of fewer than 25,000 residents.
Solvang, Calif. Was the only place that topped Astoria. The small town has a rich Danish history and makes visitors feel like they’ve “been transported to a totally different country,” according to USA Today.

The 2024 roundup included another Oregon town, Ashland, at No. 10.
This year, Astoria was also ranked at No. 10 on the list of Best Historic Small Towns and at No. 2 on the list of Best Small Town Beer Scenes.
