Vicksburg prepares for flooding from Mississippi River

VICKSBURG, Miss. (WJTV) – Vicksburg residents are emergency officials are preparing for flooding from the Mississippi River.

In early April, Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs, Jr., declared a State of Emergency for the city due to rising river levels. The river is now expected to crest at 48 feet on April 23, 2025.

Flood walls and barricades have already been installed throughout the city.

“We knew that it was coming down and that would it be flooded in the next couple of days. So, we just have to make sure that everything, that is on the ground, any boats are about to removed.  Our animals are out, which we do have chickens we had to relocate. And our dogs, we have to take with us, because we will be unable to get back into the house until the water is back off the road,” said Robin Reese, a resident.

Officials expect about 15 county and city roads to be closed, along with State Route 465.
