Teen boy accused in deadly 2023 shooting inside South Side apartment building

CHICAGO (WGN) — Felony charges have been filed against a teen boy accused in a deadly shooting that unfolded in the lobby of a South Side apartment building in mid-2023.

According to Chicago police, the suspect, a 17-year-old boy, who has not been identified due to his age, has been charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of attempted first-degree murder.

Officers say the teen’s charges stem from his alleged role in a deadly shooting that occurred just before 3 a.m. on May 13, 2023, in the lobby of an apartment building in the 2700 block of South State Street in Douglas.

Police said the teen is believed to have “participated” in the shooting but did not say if others may have been involved.

An initial report by police indicated that the victim, a 30-year-old man, was standing in the apartment lobby when he got into an argument with an unknown individual.

Officers said amid the argument, an unknown individual pulled out a gun and opened fire.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of his torso and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officers said the teen was eventually taken into custody on Tuesday, almost two years after the shooting, by members of the Area Three Homicide Investigative Support Team, who tracked him down on the Near West Side.

Authorities did not provide a booking photo for the teen due to his age and did not say when he would appear in court.
