Pennsylvania EV, hybrid drivers to pay extra fee: Here’s why

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Electric vehicle owners are starting to pay a new fee in Pennsylvania.

Act 85 was signed into law last year and charges EV owners an annual “road user charge” fee that funds road and bridge maintenance.

PennDOT began collecting the fee on April 1 as EV owners renew their registrations.

This year, EV owners will pay $200, or $50 if it’s a hybrid.

The fee is supposed to emulate the gas tax paid each time you fill a gas-powered car.
