State Auditor ‘Great AR Treasure Hunt’ at BC Library Thursday

The Arkansas State Auditor will be in Mountain Home on Thursday as part of ‘The Great Arkansas Treasure Hunt.’ Local residents will be able to visit with State Auditor Dennis Milligan and his staff from 9 to 1 at the Donald W. Reynolds Library serving Baxter County to be reunited with unclaimed property.

Auditor Milligan says Arkansans are often unaware of the free service and how much unclaimed property is sitting in the state coffers.

Unclaimed property consists of financial items deemed abandoned by their owners, including unreimbursed utility deposits, uncashed checks, life insurance proceeds, stock or mutual fund shares, or claims made on behalf of a deceased family member. In some cases, it includes contents left behind from abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Auditor Milligan says state residents can visit claimitar.gov to easily see if they have unclaimed property.

The discovery of finding lost money may feel like winning the lottery but Milligan says there is no luck involved; this is money that has belonged to the citizens the whole time.

Representatives will be on site at the library Thursday to help submit any documentation for their claims. A notary will be on hand at no charge to certify any documents relating to a person’s claim. The Baxter County Library is located at 300 Library Hill Lane in Mountain Home.
