Sorensen speaks to seniors about potential benefit cuts

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Illinois Representative Eric Sorensen (17th District-D) spoke with senior residents about potential benefit cuts.

Sorensen spoke at the Terrace Senior Apartment about programs such as SNAP, Social Security, Medicare and how those could be affected by cuts made by the Trump administration on Wednesday.

“Let’s understand what this administration is trying to do right here in Rockford, close the Social Security Administration office, so now seniors can’t go there,” said Sorensen. “People with disabilities can’t go there. Now they have to use the phone. Well this administration is also cutting the jobs of the people that are answering the phones, or worse yet on the phone, it says you have to come in in-person.”

The Trump Administration said cuts to those programs would not impact those who rely on them.

The Social Security Administration said Rockford’s office will not close without an order from congress.

Sorenson has already introduced a bill that would keep Social Security offices nationwide open until January 21, 2029, one day after President Donald Trump leaves office.
