The latest victory though marked the Privateers’ season-high fifth-consecutive win this season, and New Orleans will take its momentum into a weekend series against one of the Southland’s best teams: Houston Christian University.
HCU is part of a three-way tie atop the conference standings. The Huskies, Southeastern and McNeese all have a 14-4 record in league play.
However, all three programs are coming off recent losses, but HCU is the only school among the three on a losing streak. Houston Christian dropped the series finale versus Northwestern 10-5, and Texas State beat the Huskies 9-3 Tuesday night.
UNO has gone through a fluctuant year. Former LSU first baseman Blake Dean stepped down as the Privateers head coach, after nine years as the program’s skipper. Following three seasons as the team’s pitching coach though, the school chose Dax Norris to take the helm.
Norris has lead the Privateers to a 20-15 overall record. UNO is 7-11 in conference play, but New Orleans is coming off its second series sweep of the season in a non-conference battle against UNC Asheville.
“Our strength of schedule is good. Playing a tough schedule prepares you. We have to win the conference, that conference tournament. Our goal is to make a regional and you have to do that to make a regional so I feel like we’re heading in the right direction,” Norris said.
UNO and HCU begin their series tomorrow night at 6:30.
