13-year-old Mississippi boy shot in head, killed; suspects on the run

BATESVILLE, Miss. — The Batesville Police Department is searching for multiple suspects after the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy on Sunday night.

Police say the shooting occurred just after 11:30 p.m. at the corner of Everette Street and Claude Street.

The teenager was sitting in the passenger seat of a car when someone began shooting. He was shot in the head.

Terry Gardner told WREG his cousin, Cazarius Gardner, was the 13-year-old shot Sunday night.

The teen was transported to Memphis, where he died.

“It’s hurt a lot of people,” said Gardner, cousin. “It’s real shocking, we never thought nothing like that would happen to him.”

“The night it happened I was sitting in my living room looking at TV,” said a neighbor. “I heard three shots, and I thought it was firecrackers.”

The neighbor said that the lady next door told her it was a gun and a boy was shot.

WREG was told he attended Como Primary School.

The North Panola School District released a statement on social media identifying the victim as Cazarius Gardner. A family member confirmed this, saying he was a middle school student.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. The students, faculty, and staff will always remember Cazarius’s bright smile, playful nature, and his dedication to his academics and teammates. Please know that we are here to support you.”

Investigators are now searching for several suspects involved in the fatal shooting, which police say was the result of an altercation.
