Detective Michael Ruff with the Salt Lake City Police Department told ABC4.com that a box truck delivering cargo to the Delta Cargo facility was backing out when the driver of another delivery truck walked behind him and was struck.
Officers with the SLCPD Airport Division responded to the scene and assisted with emergency first aid. However, despite life-saving efforts, the man died at the scene.
“We’re investigating this as an industrial accident rather than a traffic accident,” said Ruff. “So our investigators will be wrapping up here shortly and then the investigation will be turned over to OSHA for them to look into.”
The victim’s identity has not been publicly released but Det. Ruff said they were not a Delta employee. A Delta spokesperson confirmed with ABC4 that the man was a delivery driver for a separate company.
“We are saddened by this tragic accident and will cooperate with any investigations,” the Delta spokesperson said in a statement. “Out of respect for the individual, his family, and the investigation process, we’ll decline any further comment at this time.”
Delta confirmed that its Salt Lake City cargo operations were closed as of 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. The company’s airline services for customers at Salt Lake International Airport were not impacted.
An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
