Deadly crash closes part of US 31 in Hamilton County

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. – A deadly crash closed part of US 31 in Hamilton County on Wednesday morning.

According to the Westfield Police Department, officers were notified of an incident involving a semi and a passenger vehicle around 6:50 a.m.

It happened on US 31 northbound just north of 161st Street. All northbound lanes were closed between 161st Street and 169th Street.

Westfield police said it appeared the car was heading southbound when it crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes, leading to the collision with the semi.

The driver of the car died. The truck driver was taken to an area hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Northbound US 31 is expected to stay closed for “several hours,” police said.

Police said cars were being directed off at the 161st Street exit. Traffic can go west on 161st Street to Oakridge Road, north on Oakridge Road to State Road 32, and then east on State Road 32 back to US 31.

The crash remains under investigation.
