Beefed up police presence at New Orleans’ Lakefront for Easter Sunday

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Those celebrating Easter Sunday at the Lakefront should expect several traffic restrictions.

From West End Boulevard to the Seabrook Bridge, the eastbound lane of Lakeshore Drive will be open to traffic, and the other will be reserved for emergency vehicles. Drivers should also expect to stop for law enforcement.

“We will be enforcing tent, speeding, no license plate, brake, tag, excessive noise, both music and exhaust, as a means to deter deviant behavior,” said Levee District Police Superintendent Joshua Rondeno.

Orleans Levee District Police will now be receiving assistance from Troop NOLA, bringing the total number of patrol officers to 80.

“We have air support. We have ATV riders with our side by sides, but more importantly, we have the police presence, with boots on the ground, with the ordinance, Levee District, patrolling and enforcing the laws. We’re going to pay particular attention to traffic violations, DWI enforcement, impaired driving,” said Louisiana State Police Major Donovan Archote.

In the past, leftover trash has caught the eyes of visitors and elected officials, which is why there will be additional trash collections and the addition of dumpsters.

“This year, for the first time, there’s going to be crews going around, and they’re going to be, at certain times, cleaning the trash cans, emptying them. That’s going to help. But it’s important to recognize that even that may not be enough, because that particular stretch that lakefront is so popular, it’s okay to help out. We appreciate it. Bring a black bag or two, and let’s enjoy it,” said New Orleans City Councilman Eugene Green.

Officers will also be using cameras and other technology to stop crimes before they happen.

“Our response now is in advance. We are no longer going to chase problems after they have occurred. We are going to preemptively, plan in advance for success. That’s the importance of a collaboration. I don’t we don’t have helicopters, we don’t have boats, but we have partners with helicopters and boats,” said Rondeno.
