INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Zoo welcomed a baby orangutan and asked Hoosiers to name the baby.

With more than 9,000 votes, the name ‘Edi’ is now the baby’s name. Edi means “the handsome one”, and garnered 50% of the ballots. ‘Ketambe’ received 38% of the votes and ‘Lada’ earned 12% of the votes, respectively.

Edi was born at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center on February 20 to his mother, Sirih, and his father, Basan.

This marks the second birth of an orangutan at the Indianapolis Zoo since the opening of the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center in 2014. His birth means that now one dozen primates live in the facility.
