Turnpike Commission unveils Traffic Operations Center

(WHTM) — It’s National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, and abc27 got a behind-the-scenes look at the Pennsylvania Turnpike Traffic Operations Center (TOC).

The center looks similar to a 911 dispatch center, depicting different stretches of the Turnpike from all across the state.

The TOC is staffed 24/7 with 5 to 7 operators and one to three supervisors who watch out for accidents, disabled vehicles, and people walking on the Turnpike, and ensure help is on the way when and where needed.

“We’re turning cameras, we’re talking to the supervisors, we got the county scanners in there that we can listen,” said Joshua Knoll, a dispatcher for the Turnpike Commission. “A lot of the guys here are of fire and EMS background, so we can quickly get assistance that way or alert the county what’s going on.”

The Turnpike Commission wants you to know that you can call *11 to report any issues. The Commission says to tell them your mile marker or nearby landmark so they can reach your location.
