Smell of burnt weed leads Merced CHP to cocaine bust

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A traffic stop and the smell of burnt weed from a rental car led to the discovery of cocaine on a Fresno County highway, CHP Merced announced Monday.

According to CHP, on April 10 around 4 p.m., a K9 team conducted a traffic stop on a rental vehicle for a traffic violation on northbound I-5 at Nees Avenue in Fresno County. During the stop, officers reported a strong odor of burnt weed coming from the vehicle.

Officers say after determining a probable cause for a search, 13 pounds of suspected cocaine were found in the rear cargo area.

CHP reports all three occupants of the vehicle were arrested on scene and eventually booked on suspicion of possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine across noncontiguous counties.

Merced CHP reported the case was handed over to the Fresno High Impact Investigations Team (HIIT).
