On Wednesday, March 30th, 2022, around 7:25 p.m., Rockford Police officers were called to N. Alpine and Cleveland Avenue, where a 19-year-old man had been shot in the legs while inside a car.
The victim was taken to a hospital while officers conducted an investigation that led to the identification of Corterryis Ford, 29, as the suspect.
Ford’s mother told investigators that her son had opened the front door of her home, stood in the doorway, and fired a gun at her vehicle while she was still inside, according to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley.
Police set up a perimeter in the backyard of a home in the 2500 block of Skokie Drive, in a standoff that lasted nearly 10 hours.
Police said that during the standoff, Ford shot at an armored SWAT vehicle and destroyed the bomb squad robot.
At 4 a.m., police said Ford escaped the house, got into his car, and drove toward Belvidere. Police were able to disable his vehicle with stop sticks in the 3800 block of Stone Quarry Road.
He eventually pulled over at Appleton Street and 6th Street and got out and ran into a field, where he was chased down and Tasered, police said. Officials said he continued to struggle with police and medical personnel during his arrest.
Around 5:55 a.m. Thursday, March 31st, police said Ford was taken into custody.
On Tuesday, the State’s Attorney’s office announced Ford’s sentencing on charges of Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.
