Police urge suspect to surrender after Jeanerette shooting

JEANERETTE, La. (KLFY) — A police chase on Sunday morning ended with Jeanerette police units being shot at. The mayor of Jeanerette issues what he calls a plea, urging the wanted suspect to turn himself in.

Police have identified Jaqualin Lewis, 17 of Jeanerette. Officers say he was the vehicle’s driver in the high-speed chase. Before the pursuit, Lewis faced multiple charges. Lewis is a wanted fugitive.

On behalf of the community and the family of Lewis, Mayor Carol Bourgeois Jr. urges Lewis to turn himself in before he or someone else gets fatally injured.

“We wouldn’t want that. We came close the other night in that there was a pursuit by our officer. Jacqueline was identified while the officers were patrolling the city,” Mayor Bourgeois said.

According to authorities, Lewis was driving a vehicle stolen from Lafayette. On Sunday, around 1:00 am, Jeanerette police spotted the reported stolen vehicle and recognized Lewis.

That’s when the high-speed chase began, passing through the city of Jeanerette, outside its limits, and into New Iberia.  The mayor says Lewis fired shots at the police units with officers inside.

Lewis got away.

“Also, I am informing the public to be aware we have him listed as armed and dangerous,” the mayor stated

Before the chase, Lewis’s charges included hit and run, illegal carry, illegal discharge of a weapon, and simple escape. The mayor confirms that Lewis now also faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

“Peacefully come in. Turn yourself in peacefully. He will certainly be treated fairly and given all due processes properly,” the mayor added.

If you see Lewis, contact the proper authorities, such as Jenerette PD or 911. Bourgeois says do not attempt to confront Lewis.

The mayor notes that anyone caught harboring or sheltering Lewis will be held accountable.
